Around Every Corner

Saturday was a full day for Thugz. Around noon, Mike, Chris, and I went to a family memorial gathering for our former drummer, Doug Maas. We had organized a Doug Tribute at the Blue on October 15th, and it turned out to be a wild night. I felt it was the kind of evening Doug would have totally enjoyed. Saturday's gathering was a completely different scene - outside in the noonday sun with older relatives and friends who really didn't know Doug as a dedicated drummer. Dave Zirbel came to play with us and brought his dobro along. He and Doug had known each other since Kindergarten days, so Dave really knew about Doug's wild side and musical spirit. I felt like the little Thugz ensemble was there to educate the folks about Doug's west county life. We did our best, and I think the family members were quite grateful. Soon after leaving the memorial, we got together at Timber Cove Inn for our evening gig. Luckily we had a good crowd of many local folks in the lounge. I was so happy to see Drew, Maris, Doris and lovely Amrina Rayne there too. Some wild and crazy tourists danced a bit, and a bunch of Germans told us we should play in Hamburg - that was a happy idea. The whole day could have been a chore, but it turned out to be emotionally and musically good for me. You never know - around every corner you might expect some difficult challenge, and then - good things happen. I'm always grateful. Take care. Love, Sylvia
