Rainy Night in Penngrove

It's the happenin' spot in Penngrove - good old Twin Oaks Tavern. But the times they are a changin'. Soon the Twin Oaks will be run by the Hopmonk folks, so we'll see how things evolve. I must say the Hopmonk people have brought lots of great talent (yes, Thugz too!) to Sebastopol and Novato. We hope the home-town, home-grown atmosphere at Twin Oaks carries on. Last night, we were so happy to have a rockin' bunch of folks show up to the Tavern on a rainy Thursday night. We had old friends and new Thugz converts dancin' the night away. I was really amazed to see and feel the group energy. I had my silly mind made up that it was going to be a slow evening - oh no. Right away, on the first song, "Cold Rain and Snow," I was jolted into changing my world view as my piano stool collapsed underneath me, forcing me to smile and accept the gracious help of nearby fan. Of course, our wonderful Drew ran to my rescue as well - boy oh boy, it was great to have him around again. I proceeded to play using a bar stool and then a chair with a pillow and binder for lift - crazy. But the evening cruised on - Mike was a super leader and called for songs that the crowd really wanted. Ian brought back "Hurdy Gurdy Man," and the fans sang along. Andre was very much at home in his neighborhood bar so he got to do the talking. He announced that Dec. 10th was the first night way back in 1965 (I believe) that the Dead performed as the Grateful Dead. There we were - carrying on a fabulous tradition - stormy night, collapsing stool and all. There was such an appreciation of the music and the fellowship, such warmth in that little bar. It was a great night - full of tradition and good cheer - just what we need for the holidays. Take care. Love, Sylvia
