Dylan Celebration

It was a warm, 1st of June evening last night - perfect for our Thugz Dylan tribute show at the Rio Nido Roadhouse. We arrived early to set up while the pool was full and sun worshipers were lounging. It was still light when we did our first set for the early crowd. Dylan's Never Ending Tour  intro, "Fanfare for the Common Man" and speech, delivered by Melanie, started things off. That set had several of my favorite Dylan tunes - "Love Sick," "Ballad of a Thin Man," and "Shelter From a Storm." Stephanie Salva added so much with her chosen tunes and glorious vocals. At one point, Ian got to leave his drum throne and play guitar while he sang. Later in the set, Mike's long-time friend from Santa Cruz, Tom Dilbeck, joined us on bass for songs he played with Mike many years ago - "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," "I Shall Be Released." Then the second set brought a few more surprises. Our wonderful Drew sang his best Bob Weir version of "Stuck Inside Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again." Craig added saxophone licks on "Everything Is Broken" then stepped off to get ready for the big horn section number that was coming up. Mike did a fabulous version of "Early Roman Kings " - definitely one of my favorites. On "Rainy Day Women," the horn section appeared - with 2 saxes (Craig and Tom), a trombone (Mike), Ian on guitar and our old friend, Shawn Britton, played drums. Of course, all the fans added to the rousing vocals on that one. Then Mike skipped some tunes on the set list - a sure sign that we had to bring the evening to a close - darn - I wanted to hear more Ian guitar and vocals on "Watchtower," but it didn't happen. We moved on to our final number, "Like a Rolling Stone," everybody's favorite. I was sorry we had to end - mainly because we had a fantastic version of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" - complete with a full vocal homage to Dylan and his visionary talents at the end - oh well - it will appear one day.  Our thanks go to all the fans and supporters who came out and enjoyed the music with us - what a great night! Take care. Love, Sylvia
