Monte Rio Return

The Thugz came home yesterday to one of our favorite venues - the Monte Rio Amphitheater. For a long time, the space was well known for hosting the Bohemian Grove concerts each summer - but that was about it. What a waste. The amphitheater is a lovely grassy open space with a big stage and lots of potential. Luckily some forward thinking Monte Rio Park and Rec. folks decided to open it for community events. So the Thugz stepped in with their friends, the Rhythm Drivers, and a show happened. I got to play looking out on a happy crowd dancing on the grass - with kids, dogs, picnics, umbrellas - the whole bit. My view also took in the tree line on the hill, and I could follow the sun's movements throughout the concert. It was a glorious day - mild, warm, no fog, blue skies - the perfect Memorial Day picture. Festivities began with Stephanie and Mike doing their duo - great singing and great acoustic guitar and uke playing. Mike's guitar riffs rang out with such clarity - it was a joy to hear. The Rhythm Drivers did a rockin' set with leader Brad Wilson singing and playing harmonica like a champ. He obviously loves the music and has a deep, soulful spirit. Finally the Thugz played their set. Bradley arrived just in time from the Strawberry Festival in Guerneville where he played with some friends. It was great to have all the Thugz together again, at home, in Monte Rio. We've missed playing our weekly gigs in the area, but some loyal fans (who must check out our website calendar) showed up to cheer us on and dance, dance, dance. There was some debate about doing an encore since the Park and Rec. folks wanted to close down right at 7 pm - but we did "Not Fade Away" - anyway. We really loved playing, and we really love all you guys out there. Thank you, thank you.  We hope to see everybody next Saturday in Rio Nido at the Roadhouse for our 5th annual Bob Dylan Celebration! Take care. Love, Sylvia
