Northern Exposure

Every time I drive north into Point Arena, I'm amazed to see those sea cliffs that look so much like Dover, England. I did way too much sight seeing on the drive north, staring at cliffs and searching the ocean vista for signs of whales. Luckily there was minimal traffic and perfect weather. Leftover Halloween decorations were up on Main Street as I pulled into "215 Main" - a small bar with "The Thugz" on their marquee. We didn't expect a whole lot of action the day after Halloween, but several long-time Thugz fans showed up, veterans of the old Gualala Hotel days. The Thugz were a trio last night, Mike, Chris and I - but Drew was there too, helping with equipment and sound. Mike played his Ovation, such a treat. We managed to get a sound balance going early on, so the night went very smoothly. We had some dancers, but mostly listeners - folks who looked wiped out from trick-or-treating or just the past work week. North coast people are always so excited to have live music come their way. I get the impression that many of them were city folk, nature lovers, who came north for a quiet life. The next generation usually shows up in the bar rather late and rather drunk. Sure enough, we had the rowdies dropping "F bombs" at evening's end. It reminded us of the 2-tiered crowd that came to the Hotel in years past - a gracious and fun-loving bunch followed by rebellious and whacky youth. The Thugz just presented great music to any comers. It was a fun show, and we were rewarded when the the bar manager presented us with bottles of the owner's homemade wine - with the warning, "Just let it breathe." Oh my. Point Arena is a town full of contrasts - and challenging weather conditions - but the Thugz are always welcome there, and we appreciate it so much. Next stop, a Mike and Sylvia duo at Forestville's Backyard restaurant. Then Mike will head for some "southern exposure" in the Glendale area. Eventually the Thugz will all convene again, right where we belong.  Take care. Love, Sylvia
