River Patriotism

Before the big 4th of July weekend, I found the Declaration of Independence on Google and printed a copy, just for fun. What those 18th century guys longed for still rings true today, and our "inalienable right to pursue happiness" is at the top of our list. When we did our Amphitheater show on the 5th, I definitely observed all kinds of folks pursuing happiness. Levi Lloyd and his 501 Band captivated the crowd with a driving R & B set. Then, the Thugz did their thing in the late afternoon sunshine. People wanted to relax on the grass, but eventually we had folks on their feet, grooving to the tunes.  Across the street, the Monte Rio F. D. guys served up BBQ, and the Monte Rio beach bunch prepared for the Water Carnival and fireworks.  Monte Rio was alive with folks celebrating their own version of what " independence" is all about. Late in our set, a wonderful local lady came on stage to sing the National Anthem. The crowd was receptive, but the high point was when the audience joined her to help sing through the ending high notes. It was an all-American moment!

Then the Thugz ended with a jumpin' "U.S. Blues." Hands went up on "...wave that flag, wave it wide and high..." It was a Thugz-style Independence Day, for sure!

Take care. Love, Sylvia
