River - Style Mardi Gras

My last blog was all about our dispersed fan base. The greater west county river community has gathered around our regular gigs, but things have changed now that we aren't in one place each week. I thought we would have to wait for Memorial Day to get us all together again. We weren't sure how the Mardi Gras gig at the Roadhouse would work since there were so many other choices for music lovers out there. But, once again, I was blown away by the crowd - they came, danced, sang along and reveled in each others' company. What a night. Carol and Daniel said the nicest thing, "Where else could you get so much fun for $5?" The Thugz did a river-style Mardi Gras show with plenty of Dead tunes. Drew helped us out with his great Bob Weir interpretation too. I wish I could, but I can't play like Dr. John or Professor Longhair, but Mike can sure do a great Louis Armstrong. We launched into "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," slowly at first then right up to parade speed. I would have thrown out beads if I'd had them! Everybody sang and felt that Mardi Gras glow - "Laisser les bon temps rouler!" All night long Andre would give us some of his Cajun patois - hardly his usual classy Montreal French. Shawn did a fabulous job on drums while Bradley was off in the big city. Our Craig showed up with Jo - he looked relaxed and happy. Chris had a blast playing with his old pal, Shawn. When Chris is happy, his playing gets really lively - I love it. Mike was at his best - again. I always wait for the moment he does his trumpet solo in "Bertha" - he makes the song take off. Having such a responsive audience helps us do our best as we exchange energies. So the Thugz tribe is alive and well - thriving, it seems. Mardi Gras doesn't have a Thanksgiving vibe, more like an over-indulgence vibe. But I'm so very, very thankful for the music and for all of you out there.  Take care. Love, Sylvia
