Thugz and Boris Garcia

Our night with the Boris Garcia Band was a bi-coastal love fest. They are a hard working, super talented group that regularly bombards the east coast with loving energy and great jams. We were lucky to connect with them again when they made this trip west to tour the coast. The Thugz acted as hosts last night at the Forestville Club, so we worked hard to push the publicity, do the sound system and do the warm-up set. It was a classic scene right out of any "musician's manual" as the big van pulled up to the club and off-loaded Boris Garcia guys and their touring gear. They set up and went through the usual sound check - with Drew working very hard behind the board. Power supplies cut in and out, and it was difficult to get things right - but Drew was a trooper! Once they finished, we attempted to set up and check our sound - all the while the Forestville Club bar patrons kept on selecting odd jukebox songs (who chose "Barbie Girl"???) It was chaotic, but the show finally began. We did a short set of original tunes, Andre joined us for a few, and then it was "switcheroo" time. I was so grateful so many Thugz fans came out to join in the fun. Folks stayed on and were blown away by the quality and energy of the Boris Garcia tunes. They can change back and forth between instruments, so there's always an interesting sound. Their lap steel adds a powerful voice to their jams, and I think the keyboard guy is amazing on piano, organ and mandolin. Andre, Chris and Stephanie joined them for some combination jam tunes while Mike and I got to sit back and just enjoy the music. It was a good night. Sometimes I wonder if we're living in a bubble around here, but those Garcia boys proved that there's hope for us all - the east coast scene folks are just like us - music really is the tie that binds.
