Winnarainbow Clowning Around

Daytime in Laytonville: hot, hot, hot. Nighttime in Laytonville: cold, cold cold. We played our sets at Camp Winnarainbow with enthusiasm, but I know I was a bit limp from the day's heat. Wavy Gravy rode around in his little Campmobile, sharing smiles and laughter as he organized the evening's events: a dress-up "Croquet Tea" followed by a Thugz concert on the rainbow stage. We all put on our red clown noses for the first song, written by Wavy himself, "Basic Human Needs." Wavy rode around the stage area like the Pied Piper, followed by a camper conga line in costumes and flashing light adornments. It was a scene right out of a movie - a documentary, perhaps, chronicling the tribal, peaceful aspects of a creative hippie scene. The band played on, joined on stage by Ian's son, Zephyr - in an outfit from the costume tent that helped him take on his alternate personality, Godzilla. Only 5 years old, and an incredible performer, in front of the band, in front of the whole audience, no fear, just rockin' out (of course, his devotion to Michael Jackson's talents helped!). As always, the campers were a great audience, avid dancers and very grateful and encouraging all evening. Wavy sat in the first row, and I felt like we were doing the show just for him. He has given the world a sense of playfulness and generosity, and it was nice to offer him something in return. After the show, and after packing up, we all returned to our little camp sites - mine was the back of my car in the starlit parking lot next to the camp's garden. The temperature really dropped, so by sunrise around 5:30am, I was ready to move, head out and turn on my car heater. Chris had the same situation, and we met early by the stage where we had left all our gear. Mike, Melanie, Stephanie, Ian, Godzilla, Drew, Maris, and their beautiful baby, all stayed on in their tents - I hope they were warm. Andre decided to head home around midnight after the show, anxious to check on things at home. So the Thugz did Camp Winnabow again. The place is quite magical. The people are so creative and full of fun - it's a real treat to do the trip each June. Take care. Love, Sylvia
